The Inspiration
This massive painting in its original frame was purchased by the Andersons from the Spanish artist in 1902 along with three different studies of various characters within the composition. The east and west wings of Anderson House were sized to fit this important artistic statement, which was so large it had to hang on a wall at the Corcoran Gallery until this house’s construction was complete. It depicts the coronation of the Dogaressa of Venice, Maria Foscari, in 1423, shown crossing a footbridge over a Venetian canal, to join her husband, the Doge, under the parasol at right. The Andersons paid $25,000 for the painting, frame, and three studies on display in the same room. Considered by Villegas’ contemporaries to be his finest work, it was painted in his studio in Rome and went unsold for 10 years before Larz and Isabel discovered it. Florist’s inspiration: We are bringing art to life by creating the illusion of the steps with red, soft lush cascading florals. The modern design techniques used were to enhance the natural beauty of the museum while adding elements of surprise.
